Mandibular advancement splint
What is it ?
In close collaboration with specialists from Hôpital de la Tour, the Cenas sleep medicine centre can provide treatment using a mandibular advancement splint.
The Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) is a non-invasive, custom-made oral device that pushes the lower jaw forward during sleep to facilitate airflow through the upper respiratory tract.
It is indicated for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or snoring, and can be an effective alternative to CPAP.
For people with sleep apnea, muscles in their tongue and throat relax during sleep, meaning the air is obstructed in upper airways, which can lead to a decrease (hypopnea) or even interruption (apnoea) in airflow.
By moving the lower jaw forward, the Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) opens the respiratory tract in the pharynx, thus reducing the obstruction by increasing the space at the back of the throat.
Effectiveness of the treatment
MAS can be adjusted gradually to improve effectiveness. It can be an effective treatment for OSAHS as it significantly reduces snoring, the frequency of sleep apnoea, and improves overall sleep quality.
This device is not suitable for patients with dental problems.

Side effects
MAS may cause discomfort such as hyper salivation, dry mouth, dental or jaw pain. Such discomfort is usually very mild and temporary.
In the long term, this treatment can cause orthodontic alterations, and therefore requires regular consultation with the specialist who prescribed the treatment (maxillofacial surgeon, ENT specialist, dentist…).
